I have no problem whatsoever with accepting the idea that a simpler, albeit stranger looking golf swing might ultimately be more consistent and effective. I'm a software engineer by trade and I see parallels of this continually. The group mind is a funny thing. So I was receptive when I saw this, and when I looked up the book I assumed it would probably have content that they leave out of the videos. So I figured it would be worthwhile to get it to make sure some necessary piece would not fall through the cracks.Wrong.I probably should have just stuck with the videos, although they have some issues as well(more on that later). The problem is that Todd Graves, for all his statements about how you have to get all the details right to master this, tends to leave out the pieces you need to actually get those details. Especially given that this is print, and when you're writing it out, expanded descriptions and a LOT of photos are probably going to be necessary.First example. The grip. Oh yes, so important to mastering the the swing. And yet, it gets pretty short thrift when it's being described. Oh sure, he goes into a lot of detail(to the point of being repetitive), about how it should fit in the hand. But in terms of how you align the clubface with regard to your hand position you get one sentence: "The clubface is always aligned with the back of the lead hand." OK, so what does that mean in terms of how it should look? Does that mean the hand position is turned differently for higher lofted clubs? Or is it perpendicular to the bottom edge of the face. Which is what it looks like, but nothing's ever stated as such. So you have to just guess or keep trying things on the range till it works. Which I guess *is* the Moe Norman way, but that's kind of why I bought the book. So I wouldn't have to leave it to chance and experimentation. I even went to the website and checked every set up video for coverage of this and didn't find anything. Not even a photo of what you see looking down the shaft at the club face. Except for a couple with the driver. Nada on something like a short iron.Here's another one. He talks a LOT about set up and address. And I certainly do get that. But then talks about how important the variations are between the beginning position for woods and irons and then usually just has photos for the woods. Does adding a second set for irons really cost that much?There's also little discussion as to different physical characteristics. When he discusses stance, it's based on a hard wired 22 inch jumping off point for your driver. OK, is that 22 inches for everybody, no matter what height or body type? Or are there implied adjustments based on body type, leg length etc. that you can or should make that aren't being mentioned? Doesn't have to be a set formula, but some suggestions as to how you can approach trying adjustments might be nice.And it's obviously not all that current or he'd cover things like single length irons. I have a set of Pinhawk SL Hybrids that I just built and it would be nice to how these figure in. Especially given that Bronson DeChambeu, who Graves mentions, uses single length Cobras. No adjustment? Some adjustment. Anything?And that's just what I've gotten to so far. There might actually be less instructional content in this than there is what I'd refer to as "Moe Adulation" - continual references to the "Zen of Moe" and the like. And I do kind of get that. From the history, it's obvious he had a hard row to hoe, and the golf establishment didn't make it any easier for him. I understand that Graves wants Moe to get the proper credit given the close personal relationship they obviously had. But geez, you don't have to wedge it into every other freaking paragraph. BTW, all the videos on his site have this same problem. Some of them take up half the time with a tribute to Moe and Single Plane Theory before they even get the the subject at hand.There's a saying that Tom Petty said was his guiding principle in songwriting: "Don't bore us, just get to the chorus."I happen to think if your content is more focused then people will have an easier time applying it. If that happens they'll go out and use it. If they use it and they get a lot better, then a lot of people will be saying things like, "Hey I really struggled till I found that Moe Norman thing." And then you definitely won't have to keep saying it over and over in the videos.I'm going to keep on plowing through with this and see what happens. But I may just wait until the rest of the golf season's over since I figure I'm going to find similar things to the above as I work my way through the book. It would probably be more advantageous if I could just find an instructor somewhere who had bought in and just got to them. This is looking less and less like a DIY cutover.So in summary, I think as a swing strategy it has come very compelling arguments. But as a means of achieving that in reasonable time frame I've got some doubts about this book. I'm actually in agreement with one of the comments - just go to Youtube and watch the videos. The book's cheap - a burrito at Chipotle with double meat will cost more than the Kindle version. So it's not like I'm going to cry myself to sleep or anything. I came to Florida for a vacation and thought while I am here i will try my new swing at the driving range. I was totally surprised at the results of that large bucket of balls that I used for my new Single Plane Swing. I realize that it was the first time I tried it and it might have just been a fluke but I never hit the ball on the sweet spot as I did that day, and straight...it was awesome.
